The ADI Awards on industrial design and design culture recognise several projects by Elisava students

Several projects by Elisava students have been awarded at the ADI Awards 2024. ADI-FAD, together with Fundació Banc Sabadell, encourages young design students to present their final degree, master or postgraduate projects at ADI Medals with the aim of contributing to joining the academic field with the industrial world, inspiring the talent of new generations.

In this edition, the members of the jury Xavier Torras, Bern Donadeu, Ángela Montagud, Xueyu Ji and Pablo Sevilla have selected 15 projects, which competed for a Gold Medal, two Silver Medals and 12 Bronze Medals. The trophy of the medal has been designed by Ariadna Sala, alumni of the Undergraduate Degree in Design and Innovation and the ex aequo winner of the Gold Medal 2022 with her TFG Balisa. The awarded Elisava projects this year were the following:

Gold ADI Medal Neoshell

Neonatal incubator born to improve the technology of neonatal care and eases economic and emotional loads, reducing the medical attention need and allowing parents to focus on the wellbeing of their babies. The jury evaluated it as a product with an excellent idea, execution and communication.

Silver ADI Medal Hipcare

Studies: Master in Product Design and Development

Splint that replaces the cast in the treatment of hip dysplasia in infants. It reduces the impact of traditional treatment, as well as the use of general anaesthetics in each cast replacement, the lack of hygiene and breathability of the cast, its effects on the skin and the difficulties involved with diapers. According to the jury, it stands out as a product that offers an effective solution for babies and families to a specific problem and successfully solves a complex design.

Object lifter for elderly people living in buildings without elevators. An inclusive and practical device that relieves the labour of climbing stairs carrying heavy packages. Punt contributes to active aging: the empowerment of the elderly to become proactive in society. The jury awarded it for its simplicity and its application in providing an easy and accessible solution for low-income seniors.

Bronze ADI Medal Seating system

Proposal for the iconic USM system, in which the seats stand out, with the goal of retaining all of its capabilities without tampering with the system. The solution includes four upholstered modules, four accessories and a joint. The modules consist of a seat, pouf, backrest and armrests, which offer infinite configuration possibilities. Accessories include trays and a table and applying them to these new designs will help tackle future tasks.

Form Follows Taste

The aim of this project is to investigate and experiment with how the shape of the container affects the perception and tasting of wine, in order to design containers, instruments or tools that allow us to enjoy wine at different sensory and perceptive levels, in a new global organoleptic experience.

NOBJECTE

NOBJECTE offers a fully customisable device adapted to the needs of the user. The project incorporates artificial intelligence technology, such as image recognition that models automatic learning. In addition, it offers blind people the possibility to move freely and explore new environments.

Odapt

Odapt consists of a reusable and personalised 3D-printed wafer for two-piece ostomy pouches, which adapts to all types of stomachs. This makes it easier for the outlet of the stomach to go directly into the pouch, to avoid skin irritation or leaks.

On the other hand, several projects of Elisava have been awarded in the ADI Cultura category, whose objective is to encourage public recognition of those projects that, in both fields of design and culture, help to promote and update product design socially and conceptually, or projects that are useful to incentivize dialogue, ideas, and activity in this discipline.

Silver ADI Cultura Neutopías. Nuevas utopías y diseño de futuros

The book aims to be an approximation to the phenomenon in which dystopia has been established as a hegemonic paradigm, counteracting it with some critical analyzes of past, present and future utopias. With the purpose of encouraging the design sector to think about the future in a purposeful way, Neutopías has expert voices in different fields that provide multiple perspectives on various utopias and dystopias.

Bronze ADI Cultura Design through cinema: A cinethnographic approach to product design practice and discourse

Research that, through the analysis of more than one hundred films, offers a vision of the image presented in cinema about the product design process and addresses aspects such as conceptualisation, production and marketing, the designer’s profile —attitude, ideology, gender or affiliations—, the agents involved who have an impact on the process, the speeches —verbalised or implicit— or the policies that prevail in the sector.

Función Rota

Author: Oblicua (collective made by some Elisava alumni)

Multimedia installation that uses 12 tables as a projection screen. An archive of different ways, fictionalized or performed, of hacking everyday objects in cinema is projected. In the work, hacking is understood as power: a practice that allows rethinking and altering given materialities, and appropriating them. It also signals a rebellion against the predetermined utility of objects, in order to explore other narratives and spaces in which to exist and become a body.

Author: Students of the Master in Set Design

Short contemporary operas, created by young talents from various creative fields and performed at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. Teams of students from different design disciplines, among them the students of the Master in Set Design, have worked on aspects such as the design of the stage space, costumes, lighting and audiovisual design.
