María Charneco
Professor of the Degree in Design

María Charneco is an architect and a doctoral student. She graduated from the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB) and she also has a Master in Advanced Studies in Architectural Projects from the UPC. She combines research with professional and teaching activities, and she has been a content advisor in the documentary field. Visiting Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. She is currently writing his doctoral thesis on Josep Lluis Sert and also teaching at Elisava, Escola Universitària de Disseny i Enginyeria de Barcelona.
Co-founder of MAIO, an architecture office in Barcelona and New York that works on spatial systems that allow for variation and change over time. MAIO projects embrace the constant transformation of everyday life while providing a strong, committed and clear architectural response. The studio has developed a wide typology of projects, from the design of furniture or exhibitions, to residential buildings or urban spaces.
MAIO has lectured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Barbican Center, GSAPP-Columbia University, RIBA, UC Berkeley, Yale School of Architecture and Piet Zwart Institute among others. Her work has been published in magazines such as Domus, AIT, Volume, Blueprint, A10 and Detail and it has been exhibited at the MOMA in New York, Guggenheim Bilbao, Art Institute of Chicago and Storefront for Art and Architecture. She has also participated in the 2016 Venice Biennale in the Spanish Pavilion and in the Chicago Architecture Biennial (2015 and 2017 editions).
