Daniele Porretta, PhD

Professor of the Degree in Design

Daniele Porretta has a degree in architecture (La Sapienza, Rome), and a PhD in Theory and History of Architecture (UPC-ETSAB, Barcelona). He also teaches in Elisava’s Design Degree. Among his fields of research there is the relationship of the city with cinema and literature, in particular the image construction of the city of the future in popular culture, from the technological utopias of the late 19th century to the dystopias of social control of the 20th century.

He has been a member of the ETSAB research group Archivo crítico del Modelo Barcelona. He has directed numerous films and conferences cycles at institutions such as the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, the Caixaforum or the Italian Institute of Culture from Barcelona. He is a regular contributor to the Institut d’Humanitats de Barcelona, ​​where he has been the director of the courses La ciudad y el imaginario de la destrucción (2011), Casa(s). Miradas sobre la idea de habitar (2015), La ciudad del futuro: utopías y distopías (2016), Futuros posibles. Utopías y distopías para el siglo XXI (2017) y Marte: la otra Tierra (2019). In 2020, together with the Luiss University Press, he published the book L’altra Terra. L’utopia di Marte dall’età victoriana alla New Space economy, that was dedicated to the history of utopia on the Mars planet.
