Spanish and PCT patent for the research project ‘BIOCEL’ by the doctoral student Laura Freixas
The doctoral student Laura Freixas has obtained a Spanish and PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) patent for the industrial research project ‘BIOCEL,’ which consists of producing biodegradable cellulose filaments made from waste organic matter.
The ‘BIOCEL’ project is part of the entrepreneurship plan Elisava Impuls that has participated several years at 4YFN of MWC, and also in different research projects both regionally and nationally from Elisava Research.
The textile industry is one of the major emitters of global drinking water pollution, global carbon emissions, and the release of microplastics into the environment. To solve these problems, ‘BIOCEL’ is an industrial research project that transforms waste organic matter into biofabricated filaments. The new production system is digitally controlled to obtain a biodegradable filament, generating an on-demand production service.
The proposal focuses on three pillars: new production processes of sustainable raw material and production on demand, virtual fashion and new design software, and digital manufacturing of soft products.
