Portable Public Space: New Public Space Formats for the Navire Avenir Rescue Ship

Portable Public Space: New Public Space Formats for the Navire Avenir Rescue Ship is Elisava’s second proposal for Navire Avenir, after Portable Public Space: Embodied Responses to the Mediterranean Refugee Crisis. Navire Avenir is an international project to design and build a rescue ship for the Mediterranean, promoted by Sébastien Thiéry (Pôle d’Exploration des Ressources Urbaines, PEROU). One of the main objectives of this action based research project is to propose new approaches to the European refugee crisis through design practices of care.
Whereas the first iteration of the project explored how to substitute European policies of distanced empathy by positing the human body as a direct agent instead of a passive subject, this time around we address the design of a simple adaptive system for the ship’s deck to respond to the multiple situations on board, both foreseen and unforeseen.
