Nero Fumo
Building materials are the most widely used material type on this planet and represent one of the main sources of environmental pollution, accounting for approximately 40% of global energy consumption and 36% of total CO₂ emissions. This project aims to address a fundamental question: how can we shift the function of materials from inert surfaces to active interfaces that regenerate the environment?
‘Nero Fumo’ is an indoor modular bio-tile made from activated charcoal. Thanks to its porous structure, this material is capable of adsorbing airborne pollutants and contributing to air purification. This is a particularly pressing issue, given that indoor air is often up to seven times more polluted than outdoor air.
Ultimately, this project aims to promote a transformation in how we design our spaces by introducing intelligent materials that actively contribute to environmental well-being and the safety of the people who inhabit them.
