Whether it be to incentivise the heroism of martyrdom or convey stark notions of good triumphing over evil, narratives of a dragonslayer on horseback have been attuned by various nations to carve out ideas of national identity through the notion of a patron saint, including in England and Catalonia.
‘Looking For George’ is an investigation into how this myth has been etched into collective cultural memory in Catalonia. Tracing the origins of the story in north-western Spain took the author to the small remote town of Montblanc, in Tarragona, where this version of the tale is said to have taken place. The series of photographs is a reflection upon the complex, mysterious and even at times, absurd nature in which fabricated narratives help form national consciousness.
