The Fundació Universitària Balmes, the entity that governs UVic-UCC, and the Fundació Privada Elisava Escola Universitària have, today, signed a federation contract.
With this agreement, Elisava is transformed from affiliated centre to full-fledged university.
For UVic-UCC, the agreement will see its university project grow and improve in quality
Ramon Tremosa said that “the agreement between Elisava and UVic-UCC strengthens the Catalan university system and favours internationalisation”
Elisava, Barcelona School of Design and Engineering becomes the Faculty of Design of the Universitat de Vic – Universitat Central de Catalunya (UVic-UCC). The Fundació Universitària Balmes, the entity governing UVic-UCC, and the Fundació Privada Elisava Escola Universitària have, this evening, signed an agreement to incorporate Elisava within the structure of UVic-UCC as a federated entity.
Elisava thereby takes a step forward, transforming from affiliated centre to full-fledged university, and therefore participating in the university’s governing bodies. The federation contract was signed by the president of the FUBalmes Board of Trustees, Anna Erra, and the president of the Fundació Elisava Board of Trustees, Ramon Benedito, at a ceremony in the Palau Robert in Barcelona, presided over by the Minister for Business and Knowledge of the Catalan Regional Government, Ramon Tremosa, and in which the rector of UVic-UCC, Josep Eladi Baños, also spoke.
After signing the contract, both institutions will work together to make it effective for the start of the academic year 2021-2022. This is anticipated to be the first year in which qualifications obtained by Elisava students (degrees, masters, PhDs and its own diplomas) will officially be issued by UVic-UCC.
A territorial balancing factor for Catalonia
Minister Tremosa congratulated the two entities saying that “the agreement between Elisava and UVic-UCC strengthens the Catalan university system and favours internationalisation”. Tremosa also highlighted that “this agreement is an example of cooperation to join forces and help generate synergies that favour students as well as different regions and entities in the country”.
“The singularities of the UVic-UCC university model show the institution’s clear commitment in the public service and create a cross-cutting and territorial university project which is a model that follows the principle of university autonomy”, said the president of FUBalmes and mayoress of Vic, Anna Erra. In her address, she explained the university’s federated structure, “its goal is to join forces and create synergies with other entities that share the same mission, to strengthen the University as a public service and further contribute to Catalonia’s territorial balance”. For the president of FUBalmes, the agreement “will bring about growth and qualitative improvements for the UVic-UCC university project, which we are all a part of”.
It is in this context that the president of Fundació Elisava’s Board of Trustees, Ramon Benedito, explained that the agreement was a step forward, with Elisava becoming a federated centre and the faculty of design of a prominent university: “The agreement gives Elisava the opportunity to participate in the governance of a unique university, whose federated structure enables the co-participation in the development and configuration of its future. Elisava will contribute its cross-cutting and multidisciplinary vision of design, which it sees as a broad discipline with a significant impact on training, research and the definition of the present and future that we want as a society”.
On a similar note, for the rector of UVic-UCC, Josep Eladi Baños, the federation agreement with Elisava is an entirely natural move: “We are incorporating into the federated structure an entity with a culture similar to our own and with high quality university studies and a prestigious reputation, being Spain’s first design school, founded almost 60 years ago. In addition, the move brings a new dimension to territorial transversality, since the Elisava Foundation is located in Barcelona”.
Internationalisation as a strategic drive
Another of the agreement’s cornerstones is the strategic drive for internationalisation that the new federation has set as a priority. “Both institutions share a vision for the internationalisation of our academic projects, so we will integrate the policies in this area and work together to give a global dimension to our teaching, research and knowledge transfer”, said rector Baños.
The agreement also stipulates that each of the federated entities will maintain the management of their centres and human, technological and property resources, as well as legal independence, based on homogenous criteria in all areas, particularly economic management, cooperative governance, the development of teaching and learning methodologies and the growth of research and knowledge transfer.
The incorporation of Elisava into the federative structure adds to that of the Fundació Universitària Bages, in 2014, and that of the Fundació d’Estudis Superiors de la Salut (FESS), the governing entity of the Faculty of Medicine, in 2016. The academic offering of UVic-UCC now includes the bachelor’s degrees in Design and Industrial Design Engineering, the Official Master’s in Design and Communication, and the broad range of Elisava’s master and postgraduate programmes and professional training courses.
