Design for City Making

Design for City Making is a program driven by ELISAVA in collaboration with different partners. Each initiative is an autonomous contribution to the city making process. As a whole, these projects are a broad exploration of the Collaborative City scenario, its meaning and enforceability in Barcelona and the possibilities for design professionals and design schools to become agents of its implementation.

The world is changing fast, but cities are changing even faster. In this turbulent context, the traditional city planning has been paralleled by more flexible processes: city-making projects. Design for City Making in Barcelona aims to investigate the nature and the possibilities of these projects and verify their role in generating - or regenerating - urban fabric, as well as achieving more liveable, sustainable and social cities through the a research through design process.

Started in October 2017, this is a 3-year program that coordinates and creates synergies between different teams of teachers, researchers and students. These projects aim to enrich and enhance the Collaborative City Scenario, which can be described by a set of 'urban qualities': Collaborating, Bridging, Commoning, and Democratizing.

Mixing together both undergraduate and postgraduate students from very different fields, these projects are developed with a team of tutors that include architects, designer, engineers, artists and social scientists. They also include a partnership with an external institution, and this mix of stakeholder is fundamental for the participatory essence of the results. These are some of the projects that are being carried out:

  • CoBOI Social Innovation Lab
  • Invisible Makers: Mapping Poble Nou from the Ground-up
  • Communicating for the City,
  • Participatory Democracy and Interaction: Improving Citizens' Involvement in Democracy through an Online Platform
  • Transformation of the Nau Bostik into a Hotel for Refugees
  • A la Plaça: Modes of Public Space Appropriation in Barcelona
  • City and Maker Culture

Design for City Making is coordinated by the DESIS Lab ELISAVA, run by Ezio Manzini, Albert Fuster and Daan Heijsters (Junior Design Researcher). Moreover, this program is part of the thematic cluster Creative City, a design research program driven by a group of international DESIS Lab.
