    Access and admission

The Postgraduate in Product Concept is a professional course that offers two types of design projects for its students. At the same time, in the modules of Concept, Management and Representation, which are parallel to exclusive Workshops, the resources to face its realization are offered. The contents of these modules have a broad perspective and are also oriented towards other needs of the professional activity.

Some of these projects are based in research, they are carried out individually and the students agree to conceptualize from the field of Experimental Design, as an initiation to the Research in Design. Some others, which also have an exploration and experimentation focus, are oriented to solve the requirements that companies pose to us. Until 2018, we have worked with more than twenty national and international firms that have commissioned us to explore topics within their respective fields. Elisava is one of the pioneer schools in the application of Experimental Design in academic projects1. Since the mid-eighties we have been working with this kind of projects to get some advanced information on the application of new technologies and materials, as in the configuration of the form and interaction of industrial products.

The Postgraduate is a test bed to anticipate and test solutions oriented to satisfy new needs. This know-how, related to the current techniques of creativity and UX, offers a complete offer for conceptualization in design.

Concept module

  • Product. Experience. Service
    • We work based on a people-centered design approach:
      • Discovery and observation
      • Analysis
      • Creation, prototyping and interaction
      • Presentation of proposals

  • Design map
    • Brief tour of the contemporary history of design in Spain.
    • Visit to the Museum of Disseny. Map of currents and current trends.

Project module

  • Company project
    • How do you approach a design project from the position of a professional studio? In this subject, students will work with real projects to obtain feasible design concepts.
    • The course seeks the agreement and the concurrence of interests with companies representing the current management and production model in a globalized context
    • It consists of carrying out conceptualization projects arranged by means of collaboration agreements that are interesting for the students, the company and the school.

  • Research project: individual academic project in which, from a general problematic, the challenge of answering the research question is addressed through experimental designs.

  • Workshop: It is an intensive work format, but the immersion in the dynamics of sequential work allows us to develop our best skills to generate ideas.

Representation module

  • Digital expression
    • Optimize the skill of communicating any creative idea through understandable representation systems for professional interlocutors, exploiting the possibilities of the 3D virtual world.
    • Learn the current needs and computer resources used in the field of product design.

  • Sketching
    • The course provides the basic tools of freehand drawing for the representation of design concepts during the work phase and even for the final presentations.
    • It helps to perfect the technique to those who already have acquired knowledge.

  • Models
    • Assistance for the realization of work models and presentation of the different projects that are carried out in the course.
    • Make sense of the work model as an active element in the design process

  • Presentation resources and methods
    • Graphic design resources for the composition of memories, panels and projections.

Management module

  • Management
    • Train the designer to make him able to carry out and direct the design process effectively.
    • A practical map of introduction to the necessary elements to approach the relationship with the client, to know the models of budgets, hiring and retribution. The figure of the design manager and the services industry.

  • Protecting designs
    • Discover the current situation of the protection and registration of industrial design in the national and international panorama.
    • Resources and strategies to protect own creations.

  • Communication resources
    • The oral expression of the project. Attitude and resources for public presentations.
    • Planning professional communication.
  • Enhance the initial phase of the design process by:
    • The application of creativity techniques.
    • User-centered design resources.
    • Methods of Experimental Design.
  • Know the current situation of product design, through the designers participating in the course from the most relevant agencies and studios of the industry.
  • Experience the knowledge acquired through the realization of real projects with companies. These companies are producers and have their decision center in Spain. We collaborate with representative firms of various sectors of the industrial product.
  • Provide solid knowledge about the latest technologies in the industry and the different materials offered by the market, in order to develop the product in the simplest, most efficient and economical way possible.
  • Know the technological feasibility and production costs of a project to be able to make the best decisions in the course of its development.
  • Study and evaluate the concrete decisions that are taken in a product development project through the exhibition and discussion of real projects carried out by companies.
  • Learn to use different tools of CAD (Computer Aided Design) / CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) that allow to represent, visualize and simulate the behavior of a product to guarantee the viability and the correct functioning of the final product.

Transversal competencies:

  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams to manage new products
  • Ability to identify opportunities and define design concepts.

Specific competencies:

  • Ability to carry out new product projects, from the conceptual phase to the technical development.
  • Ability to assess the functional, aesthetic, cultural, technological, economic and communication implications of the new product to be developed.
  • Ability to apply the creative techniques of reference, as well as the most effective expression and management resources.
  • Ability to apply the knowledge acquired from the selection of materials, transformation processes and structural and kinematic simulation, to the project of redesign or optimization of a product.
  • Ability to use prototypes as a validation tool for business projects carried out.
  • Ability to apply the tools of CAD / CAM / CAE, to generate any 3D geometry, quality rendered images and videos of assembly and operation of the product.
