MAIO Architects, Maria Charneco’s studio, wins a FAD Interior Design Award 

The winning projects of the 2026 FAD Awards for Architecture and Interior Design have been announced, as revealed by the jury of the 68th edition during the ceremony held on 17 June at the Disseny Hub Barcelona (DHub).

Among the award-winning projects is the renovation of a home located on Argumosa Street in central Madrid, designed by MAIO Architects, the studio led by Maria Charneco, lecturer in the Bachelor in Design and Innovation, which received recognition in the Interior Design category.

The jury highlighted that the intervention “completely transforms an initially unremarkable interior into a domestic landscape of remarkable spatial intensity.” Starting from a conventional brick-framed entrance, the project reorganises the home through a diagonal circulation route and introduces mirrored doors that expand and multiply the perception of space.

One of the most highly valued aspects of the project is the replacement of traditional partition walls with curved wooden volumes that simultaneously function as structure, furniture and spatial boundaries. These elements integrate storage, circulation and enclosure, generating “a continuity between architecture and interior design”.

The mirrored movable doors also create a constantly changing and theatrical image, reinforcing the feeling of a fluid and mutable space. In the words of the jury, the result is “a home where the domestic becomes liquid, continuous and perceptually unstable”.
