Currently, the education system in Spain is regulated and defined by two laws: the Organic Law of Education (LOE) of 2006 and the Organic Law of Modification of the LOE (LOMLOE) of 2020, which introduces some changes with respect to the previous one. Within this framework, the Spanish education system is organised into different stages, courses and levels.

These include university education, which is part of higher education. The university degree or university course provides general training in one or more disciplines and its duration depends on each university degree, ranging from three to five years, although four years is the most common.

There are currently 88 universities in Spain, 50 of which are public (including two distance learning universities) and 38 private universities. According to data provided by the Ministry of Universities, published at the end of the academic year 2020-2021, during the academic year 2019-2020, 3,008 bachelor’s degree courses were offered in Spain as a whole.

The branches of knowledge to which Bachelor’s degrees can be assigned are Arts and Humanities, Sciences, Health Sciences, Social and Legal Sciences, and Engineering and Architecture. If we go into detail, the branch of Social and Legal Sciences is the one that had the highest number of university bachelor’s degrees (1,068) during the 2019-2020 academic year, and the lowest number of degrees taught (251) was in the branch of Sciences. Madrid, Catalonia and Andalusia were the Autonomous Communities with the highest number of degrees offered.
