The project Hipcare, developed by students of the Master in Product Design and Development class of 2022, has won a gold medal at the prestigious Braun 2024 Design Awards. This recognition includes a $10,000 prize and highlights the project’s innovation in this area under the slogan ‘Ideas to Keep’.

The winning projects have been presented this May at Braun’s headquarters in Kronberg, Germany, at a special exhibition bringing together the best of international design.

Hipcare is an orthopaedic device designed to treat hip dysplasia in infants. 3 in 100 newborns worldwide suffer from this affection and must spend 3 to 4 months with 70% of their body immobilized by a plaster cast. Acknowledging this situation, the Hipcare team felt the urge to improve babies’ quality of life, offering a friendlier and more sustainable treatment.

The device resolves the lack of hygiene caused by the traditional plaster cast and prioritizes both the comfort of the baby and the experience of families to ease the daily challenges of treatment. It is manufactured with 3D printing to adapt to the body of each user and protect them from skin irritation. Furthermore, the material used is waterproof, so it does not require any replacement due to degradation, promotes sustainability, and lowers the impact of the therapy on the baby.
