Elisava x Girbau LAB: designing better futures

Three students from the Undergraduate Degree in Industrial Design Engineering and the Undergraduate Degree in Design at Elisava, Mario Sanz, Maria Mei Bellsolà and Núria Fandos, have collaborated in their Final Degree Project with Girbau Lab, the collaborative innovation space of Girbau, one of the world’s leading companies in the manufacture of solutions for industrial laundry. Together they have developed FIX, a project based on collecting the wet solid waste from washing machines, because it contains microplastics, and turning it into a new material, to generate value and prevent it from ending up in the environment.

FIX is part of the solution to the environmental challenge we are facing, which seeks to raise awareness of the impact of microplastics on the environment. The students have worked to find a filter waste collection solution, design materials from the collected waste and communicate the solution together with Girbau Lab.

This is the second collaboration agreement between the university and the company, since last year they presented the Clint project, a recyclable material made from solid waste generated by drying machine filters. Both projects are indicative of the sustained efforts that Elisava and Girbau Lab share, as entities committed to innovation, sustainability and the circular economy, which are joining forces to design a better future together.
