‘Des-Embolcall’ by Julia Farriol, at the exhibition ‘Toquem fusta! Disseny, fusta i sostenibilitat’

The project Des-Embolcall by Elisava student Julia Farriol Duran will be part of Toquem fusta! Disseny, fusta i sostenibilitat, an exhibition dedicated exclusively to wood that can be enjoyed at the Museu del Disseny from November 9th to January 22nd. This project was previously awarded in the IV Catalonia Ecodesign Award 2021, a prize that honours products under development and design proposals from students that aim to improve environmental performance throughout their life cycle and contribute to circular economy.

Des-Embolcall presents a system of reusable packaging in standardised formats, designed to improve the distribution chain. The project has a double function: to transport goods from the point of extraction to the point of sale and to display them without changing the container. In this way, proximity and bulk consumption are promoted and packaging materials are reduced.

The project will be exhibited at Toquem fusta! Disseny, fusta i sostenibilitat, an exposition that vindicates wood as a key material in the cultural evolution of human beings. Specifically, it offers a broad historical overview up to the present day, dedicating an area of the exhibition to showing the current applications of wood and standing in favour of sustainability and circular bioeconomy.

The exhibition, conceived from a design perspective, focuses on wooden objects that have been a turning point for mankind, from the Schöningen spear, humanity’s oldest wooden artefact, to 21st-century objects. After decades of wood being replaced by other materials in different fields, this material is coming back and being promoted in design and architecture, due to the role it can play in preserving the planet’s quality of life and mitigating the current environmental crisis.
