Vladan Joler. Explorer of Contemporary Phenomena

Date: -
Place: Agora & Atri - Elisava

Do not miss the exhibition Vladan Joler. Explorer of Contemporary Phenomena, organized by the Master's Degree in Data and Design of Elisava.

Vladan Joler explores and visualizes different technical and social aspects of algorithmic transparency, digital labor exploitation, invisible infrastructures, and many other contemporary phenomena in the intersection between technology and society. In 2018, in cooperation with Kate Crawford, he published Anatomy of an AI System, a largescale map and long-form essay investigating the human labor, data, and planetary resources required to build and operate an Amazon Echo.

This project, which will be exhibited for the first time in Barcelona, illustrates just how complex and costly a piece of consumer AI is – both socially and environmentally. This understanding of the systems behind objects is exactly the leap that designers – and society at large – need to take if we are going to build an ethical and sustainable society. We need to get behind the look of objects and understand their impact from birth to death. This work has been awarded with the Design of the Year Award in 2019 and the Design of the Decades by the Design Museum of London.

Two new projects from this hectic year, 2020, are on display for the first time. The Architecture of a Face Recognition System map is representing in detail who, how and what is implied in the data collection of citizens in the streets of Belgrade, as it is probably happening today in most of our cities around the world.

Vladan’s latest work to date is New Extractivism. Commisioned by Digital Earth for The Vertical Atlas publication, it consists on a map and accompanying footnotes described by himself as “one big messy assemblage of different concepts and ideas, assembled into one semi-coherent picture or let us say a map, a world view.”
