As every year, we start the school year with an opening lecture, this time by Jan Boelen (1967, Genk, Belgium), curator of design, architecture and contemporary art, rector of the Karlsruhe University of Art & Design (HfG) and expert in social design. The talk, entitled All Design, Good or Bad, is Social, will be held online through Zoom and you can already sign up on the link at the bottom of the page.

Graduated in Product Design from the Media and Design Academy (now LUCA School of Arts) in Genk, Belgium, Boel is also the artistic director of Atelier LUMA, an experimental design laboratory in Arles, France; and curator of the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial. He also holds the position of head of department for Masters of Social Design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

Jan Boel founded and was the former artistic director of the Z33 House of Contemporary Art in Hasselt, Belgium. Since its opening, this centre has created projects and exhibitions that encourage visitors to look at everyday objects in a new way. This is a unique laboratory for experimentation and innovation based on research, as well as a meeting place for cutting-edge exhibitions in the field of contemporary art and design.

As part of his role at Z33, Boel was the curator of the 24th Ljubljana Design Biennale in Slovenia in 2014; and he sits on several boards and committees, including the advisory board of the V&A Museum of Design in Dundee, UK; and the Creative Industries Fund in the Netherlands.
