Alumni - Andrea Soto in the Encén el Nadal competition

Andrea Soto, former student of the Degree in Design at ELISAVA, has won the second prize in the Inexperienced category of the “Encén el Nadal” Christmas lights competition organized by the Barcelona City Council.

Her project, Connected, is an installation which presents a summary of the complex interconnection system of the citizens of Barcelona. Designing these Christmas lights, Andrea wanted to reflect the innovative, active and participative spirit of our city. Leaving behind the aesthetical purposes, it’s worth mentioning that it is an environmentally friendly project, given that it can be reused thanks to the panel modulation which makes it transportable, stackable and storable.

For the first time, the Barcelona City Council has announced a public competition whose objective is to choose the design of the Christmas lights in the Aragó and Gran Via streets. There are two different categories in the competition: one addressed to professionals of the design and creative industries field, and another one addressed to young people who concluded their studies two years ago at the most.

As regards the Inexperienced category, the winning proposal has been “The Christmas Stars”, a project by M. Clara Vidal, which represents the tenderness and the magic of Christmas, with the creation of a blanket of stars in the street which will switch on and switch off with a soft movement, recalling the stars that guided the Wise Men to Bethlehem. With reference to the Professional category, the winning project has been “Sounds”, a proposal by the Emiliana Design studio which shows the most traditional onomatopoeic sounds of Christmas with illuminated letters.

The Barcelona City Council held a public act the last 14th of November, in which the winning designs were presented and the different awards were given to the winners and the finalists of the competition.
