The Enric Bricall Library welcomes an exhibition about Heartfield and Georg Grosz, two artists who contributed to the artistic avant-garde and left-wing political discourse in interwar Germany.
Heartfield pioneered photomontage applied to the covers of books published by the Berlin-based Malik publishing house, using an innovative visual technique that combined images, text and satire to attack capitalism, militarism and fascism. For his part, Grosz’s illustrations offered a scathing critique of German society during the Weimar Republic (1919-1933). The moral decadence of the bourgeoisie, the hypocrisy of the Church, state violence, and the dangers of the rise of Nazism are recurring themes in his drawings.
The work of these creators is an example of how art and graphic design can be a tool for social, political and cultural criticism. One hundred years after its creation, their work is still highly relevant today.
