Tech Day 2017: 'Designing from the two-dimensionality of materials'

The subject Design and Product from the Degree in Engineering in Industrial Design, organizes every year the Tech Day of ELISAVA, a series of lectures dedicated to a specific theme that students find inspiring to create new design proposals.

In this 2016-2017 academic year, it focuses on "Designing from the two-dimensionality of materials", reflecting on the multitude of options that two-dimensional materials open. This is this year’s full program:

Introduction to Tech Day "DESIGNING FROM THE TWO-DIMENSIONALITY OF THE MATERIALS"
Dr. Óscar Tomico. Head of Studies of the Degree in Engineering in Industrial Design.
Jessica Fernández. Responsible for the ​​Project area of the Degree in Engineering in Industrial Design.
 
10:15 a.m.
CONFERENCE 1 «Opportunities and Challenges in Two-Dimensional Materials: the Perspective of a Physicist». Dr. Sebastian Reparaz.
PhD in Physics, Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona. He spent three years in Germany (Berlin) and Australia (Sydney) developing his career as a scientific researcher. Later he joined the Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia in Barcelona. He is currently a senior scientist at the CSIC at the Institut de Ciència de Materials in Barcelona.

CONFERENCE 2 «Nanotechnology: 2D Today». Nadia Pons.
Biologist specializing in Microbiology, goes into the world of nanotechnology. Nadia specializes in developing business projects based on technologies produced in research centers and Intellectual Property management facilities, including their valuation. Since 2014, she has been part of the Department of Knowledge and Technology Transfer of ICN2.

Javier Camino - Engineer of industrial design by ELISAVA, specialized in "design management", with experience in training, advice and management of social innovation projects, within the framework of digital production and also on social and supportive economy.

Ona Bombí Aymerich - Engineer in Industrial Design by ELISAVA, Development of Prototypes in the Department of Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) at ICFO.

CONFERENCE 3 «The Influence of the Development of Advanced Materials in the Visual Communication of the 21st Century». Sílvia Escursell.
Graphic designer. Researcher on the impact generated by graphene materials or metamaterials in the paradigm of communication and graphic design of the 21st century.

FROM THE "ELEVATOR PICH" CLASSES.
The second year students of the Degree in Industrial Design Engineering will show their value propositions based on the research done for designing from the two-dimensional materials.

Two-dimensional materials are formed by a single layer of atoms and their peculiarity is that they bring unusual properties, being the same material but processed in a different scale. The first to be discovered was graphene, but there have been discovered 20-dimensional materials already and it is estimated that there are 500 more yet to be discovered. A whole new scale of matter that opens countless scenarios for design, that will have to adapt to the possibilities and the necessities of the future, suggesting innovative solutions.
